| Shaklee Corporation |
For nearly 50 years, Shaklee
has been a leading provider of premium quality, natural nutrition
and personal care products, environmentally sensitive household products
and state-of-the art air and water treatment systems. The Shaklee
brand is synonymous with high quality and efficacy, representing one
of the most well-established names in the nutritional supplement and
direct selling industries. With a robust product portfolio, including
over 47 patents and patents-pending worldwide, Shaklee operates in
Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and the U.S. and has over 700,000
members worldwide. The company is based in Pleasanton, California.
Working with a panel of nationally recognized experts on global climate
change, Shaklee completed a comprehensive inventory of the amount
of carbon dioxide and other emissions created by its operations. Through
painstakingly determining its CO2 "footprint" and investing
in proactive external offset projects to zero out the global climate
impact, Shaklee was certified as the nation’s first Climate
Neutral™ Enterprise by the Climate Neutral Network in April
2000.
To meet the standards for certification, Shaklee invested in several
offset projects. The company contributed to renewable energy technologies
in the developing countries of Sri Lanka and India, funded the expansion
of a methane capture and power generation facility in Ohio, and provided
close to $100,000 in upgrading and increasing the energy efficiency
of the heating system in Portland, Oregon’s public schools.
In addition to strengthening its position as a good corporate citizen,
Shaklee has received several awards of note including Social
Accountability International’s award for Environmental Stewardship
in 2002. Impacts in the community include the increased availability
of solar energy systems to off-grid homes in India and Sri Lanka,
expansion-related job creation in the Ohio plant, and an annual savings
of over $250,000 for the Portland public school system
Shaklee is also a member of Business
for Social Responsibility and the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce.
